Tasmania's Mini Anime Island Convention (MAICon) is over for 2013, having the theme super heroes, and what a day it was. I attended the convention in my Pikachu onesie!! (o _ - ) My wallet may have hated me just a teesie weensie bit after that day
after paying for entry, my partner and I watched the opening ceremony, the usual dribble about health and safety and glomping. For those of you who don't know:
Glomping is NOT sexual, it is the action of one person lovingly (and dramatically) attacking another with a hug. A glomp is often preadatory and lies somewhere in the grey area between a caring embrace, and a flying leap to tackle someone. The term is used extesively in anime
culture, as well as online
in text form (anime because many anime characters do this often, and online because it is short and descriptive).
In the anime fan/cosplayer scene its common to see/have glomping of a cosplayer dressed as a fans favourite character. But we as attendees to the convention are advised not to glomp as some costumes are fragile or may cause harm to others.
I bought three new tiny Pikachu plush additions for my Pika Collection. I also bought a Pikachu hoodie (which is something I have been wanting for ages, my friends of which would have heard enough of me drooling over cosplay stores about buying one). To show my support, as I do every year, I bought a convention t-shirt. There will be photos up as soon as I get them off my camera. More impulse buying of the day consisted of a vinyl figurine Derpy Hooves (now known as Ditzy Doo in My Little Pony Friendship is Magic), and another figurine of Rainbow Dash.
After buying out all the Pikachu merchandise I could get my hands on, we attended the Kimono workshop which was awesome (could have been a little better planned for teaching purposes, but I certainly re-learned how to tie an Obi which is not an easy feat for anyone). Fruits Fashion saw new strides in lolita dresses, some even incorporating the theme of the CON. My favourite being the Harley Quinn "Gotham Lolita" Gothic period lolita. There was even a cute pair of brothers under the age of 7 dressed up as Doctor Ten and Doctor Eleven, with their mum's friend in a Victorian gown modeled after the Tardis. Cosplay comp was interesting as always, even after technical difficulty, nerves, and pre-CON man flu. There was a group of Avengers doing a gender swap. Luzza and Nguyen Team won fan favourite, which as always is well deserved.
Later that night some of the local CON attendees headed to the Lazy Butterfly (a local entertainment bar) for the Lazy Butterfly Spring Ball, with the theme being fantasy dress. I dressed as a fairy/butterfly princess. I'm still washing glitter off me almost a week later
The next day my partner started our cosplays for AICon 2014 which will be held at the Wrest Point Casino and Hotel because we have outgrown the UTAS campus capacity and trader space wise. I have two costumes on order, and two more to go. I know the CON is only for two days, but I plan to enter a few competitions if everything goes to plan. My partner has something extra special and extremely hush hush on the go for cosplay comp if it works out
Myself, I have some construction work to do for a very important weapon upon the recent release of a long awaited much loved anime
Back to UNI this week too. Five weeks left until the end of term and I can go back to Flinders for the Caberet (A dance to celebrate the end of the Flinders Island Show) which has the theme of music. With such a broad theme I decided to go as "I think I'm turning Japanese" and my friend is going as "Empire of the Sun" the band. Another friend of ours has decided to go as Jessica Rabbit and apparently it looks awesome. As I painted a pair of Wonder Woman heels for a friend for MAICon (sadly she was unable to attend in the end), my friends on Flinders have asked me to paint some shoes for them too XD
9 weeks until exams are over, and 11 weeks until I graduate
Anyway, back to working on cosplays >.<
